What are the best ways to get around Chinese cities?

One of the big reasons many people do a TEFL course is not only to become teachers, but to also to get around and explore new places and cultures.

China is a large country, with lots to see and do, and on this page we’ll look at some common ways to get around the city in which you live.

Buses

Chinese cities are well covered by buses and you can travel all over any city on the bus. There are no return tickets, so each trip is single fare. Generally, the price is 1RMB for all trips, but some airconditioned buses may charge 2RMB. There is no limit to how many people may get on the bus, and in peak periods, you’ll be packed in like sardines!! Watch your belongings during these times as pick pockets frequent the buses in busy periods.

The Underground

Many of the larger cities in China have underground systems and many more are being planned for the coming years. The underground in China is clean, safe, very modern and easy to use. Single tickets range from 2-4RMB, depending on the length of journey. Why isn’t London so cheap and easy??

Taxis

Again, taxis are very numerous and common in all Chinese cities. Unlike at home, where one calls the taxi company and a taxi is sent, people needing a taxi simply flag one down in the street. Fares start at 5-7RMB (depending on the city) and stay that way for the first 3km or so. After that, they go up about 1.5-2RMB per kilometre. Drivers don’t speak English, so have someone for your school write down where you want to go at first. After time, you’ll be able to tell them in Chinese where you want to go by yourself. Taxis in cities like Beijing and Shanghai will start at around 12RMB.

Bicycle

As could be expected, bicycles are cheap and easily available to buy in any market or supermarket. Bikes start at around 250RMB in the supermarket.
