Where will I be housed when I come to China?

Where will I be housed when I get to go to teach overseas? This is one question which every teacher going to teach asks themselves.

All of theNew Bridge Global Talent Networkjobs in China come with eitherfree housing or a housing subsidy to cover the cost of rent.

In China, the rule of thumb is that you get free single housing in public schools (primary, high school, universities, etc), free shared housing with one other teacher (same sex) when working for private language centres teaching children or children/adults, and you’ll get no free housing (but a monthly housing allowance in addition to monthly salary) in private language centres which solely teach adults.

All housing is in modern, fully furnished apartments, with air conditioning and internet connectivity. With public school jobs, housing is usually on the teacher’s campus and with private schools, your apartment is usually within 30 minutes walking distance of the school. Buses are cheap (1RMB), so you can hop on the bus to get to work once you have orientated yourself more in the city. Taxis start at 7RMB if you prefer.

In young learner schools, you’ll most likely be sharing with one other foreign teacher at the school. You’ll be put up in a two-bedroom apartment and it’s pretty cool to share a place with a fellow teacher also on their China adventure.

In adults’ language centres, you will be given a housing allowance every month in addition to your salary. For the first week or so, you’ll be put up in a hotel (paid for by the school) while you look for somewhere you’d like to rent. Don’t worry, a Chinese member of staff at your new school will come with you to the letting agents so you can ask questions about any house you view and to help you sign a lease for the rent. As with everything, you will get full support from the school. Hey…you are now one of the academic team!
