What is there to eat in China?

If you are a fan of Chinese food, then you haven’t seen anything yet!

All I can say is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!

The Chinese love their food and each region of China has its own particular tastes, ingredients and cooking styles. China is nationwide famous for its bustling night foods and stalls, where you can find a whole host of traditional central Chinese foods and very, very low prices!

A favourite street food here is Kou Rou, a kind of barbecued meat, slowly roasted over open ovens and then sprinkled with local spices and fragrances. On a warm summer night, a favourite pastime for many Chinese is to meet friends and sit at low tables, with tiny stools, eating kou rou, drinking cold local beer and playing drinking games. There is a loud buzz both at outdoor street stalls and in restaurants, very much different to the quiet, hushed tones of western restaurants.

Restaurants are to be found in the thousands all over the city, and each restaurant will have its own speciality, like spicy fish, vegetarian restaurants, Sichuan restaurants, and so on. Eating out is very cheap, so much so, that many people actually never cook that much at home, TEFL teachers especially! With your salary, you’ll be able to eat out most nights with ease.

In China, a common practice at workplaces (including schools) is to order in food by phone from a local restaurant. Most restaurants are happy to deliver food in small polystyrene boxes, one containing your main dish, for example sweet ‘n’ sour pork, and the other box with your rice. A pair of disposable bamboo chopsticks are provided and away you go! Lunch or dinner at your school could not be simpler!
